This Christmas week we start worship with:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The word in this verse that trips us up is "government" (miśrâ). What does that have to do with a baby? And in the United States we have a healthy disregard for government and power, so it does not roll off the tongue with ease when describing such a beautiful event.
The word is only used twice in the Bible and the second time is the very next verse.
Of the increase of his government and of peacethere will be no end, . .
In both verses, government and peace are connected. In the second verse they are tightly coupled, but in the first verse it is the envelope that surrounds the rest of His title.
Without government there is no peace. This child was to bring both!
Frequently, I remind people that Jesus wept more than once (The shortest verse of the Bible gets too much air time!). The other time was when entering Jerusalem and the crowd was crying for what they were longing and what they were expecting "Peace!". Jesus wept because, for yet a week, by God's plan, they were not permitted to know the way of or the cost of peace (Luke 19:36-44).
During this week before Christmas we know and we can worship.
