God So Loved

Today as we begin worship we read:

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The little word "so" (hoytō) describes the verb "to love".  It does not speak of intensity, as in "I love you so much".  It speaks of method, as in "Let me count the ways".

It is the prior verses that describe the method.

John 3:14-15

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

A campfire story is told of a bridge operator whose son came with him to work one day.  As the passenger train approached, it was his job to lower the bridge into position.  But his inquisitive son had slipped away from him and had fallen into the giant mechanism.  With tears in his eyes, the operator knew the only method to save those on the train.
